Description

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) MISS is a surgical approach that uses small incisions and specialized instruments (endoscope/microscope/tubular retractors) to treat spine disorders with less tissue damage compared to traditional open surgery. 🔹 Goals Relieve pressure on spinal cord/nerves (decompression). Stabilize the spine (fusion/fixation). Correct deformities (scoliosis, kyphosis). 🔹 Common Indications Herniated disc (lumbar/cervical) Spinal stenosis (narrowing of spinal canal) Spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra) Spinal instability Spinal tumors (selected cases) Infections (TB spine, discitis – if localized) Deformity correction (minimally invasive scoliosis surgery) 🔹 Techniques Microdiscectomy – small incision + microscope/endoscope to remove herniated disc fragment. Endoscopic Spine Surgery – keyhole approach for discectomy, decompression. Minimally Invasive Decompression (Laminectomy/Laminotomy) – relieve spinal stenosis. Percutaneous Pedicle Screw Fixation – screws inserted via small skin punctures under imaging guidance. Minimally Invasive Spinal Fusion – fusion done with small incisions + navigation. Kyphoplasty/Vertebroplasty – cement injection for osteoporotic vertebral fractures. 🔹 Advantages (vs. Open Surgery) Smaller incision, minimal scarring. Less muscle/bone damage. Reduced blood loss. Shorter hospital stay & faster recovery. Less post-op pain, early mobilization. 🔹 Limitations Not suitable for very large, complex deformities or widespread tumors. Requires advanced equipment & trained spine surgeon. Longer operative time in some cases (due to technical difficulty). 🔹 Risks (like any spine surgery) Nerve injury → weakness/numbness. Dural tear → CSF leak. Infection, bleeding.
