Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) A spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord that results in partial or complete loss of motor, sensory, and autonomic functions below the level of injury. It can be caused by trauma or non-traumatic conditions. 🔹 Causes Traumatic Road traffic accidents 🚗 Falls Sports injuries Violence (gunshot, stabbing) Non-traumatic Spinal tumors Infections (TB spine, abscess) Degenerative spine disease Vascular disorders (spinal infarct, AVM) 🔹 Types of Injury Complete SCI – No motor/sensory function preserved below the level. Incomplete SCI – Some function remains below the level. Syndromes: Central Cord Syndrome Anterior Cord Syndrome Brown-Séquard Syndrome (hemisection) 🔹 Symptoms Motor: paralysis or weakness below injury level. Sensory: loss of sensation (touch, pain, temperature, proprioception). Autonomic: Loss of bladder & bowel control Low blood pressure, irregular heart rate Breathing difficulty (if high cervical injury) Other: chronic pain, spasticity, pressure sores.
